US: Bans on Gender-Affirming Care Harm Trans Youth
Laws banning gender-affirming care for transgender youth in the United States are inflicting severe harm on young people and their families, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Since 2021, 25 states have enacted sweeping bans targeting this best-practice medical care, replacing gradual, evidence-based treatments with blunt and politically driven restrictions.
“They’re Ruining People’s Lives”
Since 2021, a wave of legislation targeting transgender health care has swept across the United States, with 25 states enacting blanket bans on gender-affirming care for transgender youth as of March 2025. These legislative bans, often vague and sweeping in scope, have disrupted healthcare access for over 100,000 transgender youth, and imposed significant geographic, financial, and emotional burdens on their families.
Puerto Rican Supreme Court says nonbinary folks can update birth certificates with X gender markers
The Puerto Rico Supreme Court has ruled that nonbinary and gender non-conforming people on the island can update their birth certificates to include an X gender marker. The decision came as a result of a lawsuit by six nonbinary people who argued that the U.S. territory’s birth certificate policy violated the Fourteenth Amendment’s right to equal protection under the law.
